The metal Gulf Oil signs have been the decoration to have in your garage, play room or backyard.

Gulf Oil used to be huge here. The Gulf Bldg downtown used to be a big landmark with it's big logo sign on top. Guess I'm misremembering that it was bought by Chevron years ago.

Gulf Oil has been loosing stations to Shell in the Hudson Valley. A large number of former Gulf have switched brands many changing along with major tank and pump inspection and replacement over the last 6 months .Around here most of the Gulf stations that have not covered their orange disk with a scallop SHELL are Cumberland Farms convenience stores.

For nostalgic reasons I would like to see the presence of Gulf stations here again, but I would much prefer the prices associated with the "good old days".
I thought that Gulf was bought out by BP, no?

As long as it's an American company.

While I remember fondly the old Gulf Oil brand, I wondered how a Massachusetts company is going to come into Texas with some swagger.

The original Gulf was sold to Standard Oil of California (now Chevron) in 1985. The current Gulf is just the intellectual property and is owned by Cumberland Farms convenience stores of Massachusetts.

Has anyone ever wondered how a northeastern based company comes to be called Gulf?

Was it Gulf that used to fly oversized American flags above each station? Or was it Union 76? If it's Gulf, I hope they will continue the tradition at the Houston stations.

"Gulf Oil is a fuel retailer and distributor, without refining operations."
Always had a presence in the Northeast.
